AI is taking over every industry and market. Now, more than ever, we must familiarize ourselves with AI, at least with the essentials and basics of what AI is and how we can use it in our day to day life. In this article, I will briefly discuss what is Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI and get familiar with some basics of AI.
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
Artificial Intelligence is commonly known as AI. It refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include learning, reasoning, problem-solving, understanding natural language, speech recognition, and visual perception. AI systems are designed to mimic certain aspects of human intelligence and, in some cases, surpass human capabilities in specific domains. In simpler terms, AI is a software that imitates human behaviors and capabilities.
Broad Categories of AI
AI can be broadly categorized into 2 categories:
1. Narrow or Weak AI:
Narrow AI is designed to perform a specific task or a set of closely related tasks. It operates within a well-defined context and doesn’t possess general intelligence. Examples include virtual personal assistants, image and speech recognition systems, and recommendation algorithms.
ChatGPT is an example of this type. It is designed to perform a specific task, which is generating human-like text based on the input it receives.
2. General or Strong AI:
General AI refers to a hypothetical form of artificial intelligence that possesses the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across diverse domains, similar to human intelligence. General AI would have the capability to perform any intellectual task that a human being can.
True General AI, also known as Strong AI, does not yet exist. While we have made significant advancements in narrow or specialized AI applications, such as image recognition, natural language processing, and game playing, achieving true General AI remains an ongoing challenge. As of now, AI systems are designed for specific tasks and lack the broad, adaptable intelligence associated with humans.
Key techniques and approaches within AI include
Machine Learning (ML)
A subset of AI that involves the development of algorithms and models that enable computers to learn patterns and make predictions or decisions based on data. This is often the foundation of AI.
Deep Learning
A specific type of machine learning that involves neural networks with multiple layers (deep neural networks). Deep learning has been particularly successful in tasks like image and speech recognition.
Natural Language Processing (NLP)
The ability of machines to understand, interpret, and generate human language. NLP is used in applications such as chatbots, language translation, and sentiment analysis.
Computer Vision
The field that enables machines to interpret and make decisions based on visual data, such as images and videos. Applications include facial recognition and image classification.
Robotics
AI is used in robotics to enable machines to perform tasks in the physical world. This includes both industrial robots and robots designed for tasks like healthcare and exploration.
Document intelligence
Capabilities within AI that deal with managing, processing, and using high volumes of data found in forms and documents.
Knowledge mining
Capabilities within AI to extract information from large volumes of often unstructured data to create a searchable knowledge store.
Generative AI
Capabilities within AI that create original content in a variety of formats including natural language, image, code, and more.
These were some of the basics of Artificial Intelligence. It’s a good time to get familiar with AI before it’s too late or hard to familiarize yourself with it.
